About Miss America 2026

Miss America is one of the most iconic and respected pageant systems in the United States, founded on the principles of scholarship, service, and personal achievement. Unlike many other pageant systems, Miss America is not a beauty contest in the traditional sense. Competitors are judged on talent, on-stage question, lifestyle and fitness in activewear, and evening wear, with scholarship dollars awarded at every level of competition. The Miss America Organization is the largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women in the United States, awarding millions of dollars annually to help women fund their education and pursue their career goals. Each contestant must represent a platform issue, a social cause she is passionate about and has actively worked on. The competition celebrates women who are intellectually curious, community-driven, and committed to making a difference. From the local level through to the national stage in Atlantic City, Miss America remains a life-changing opportunity for young women across the country to develop leadership, communication skills, and professional confidence.

How to Apply

To compete for Miss America, you must first win a local or state preliminary title within your state. Visit the Miss America website and locate your state organisation to find upcoming local competitions. Each state has its own application process, entry fee, and eligibility requirements. You must be between 17 and 25 years of age, a US citizen, and meet residency requirements for your state. Prepare a talent act (two minutes maximum), select a social impact platform, and be ready for interview, onstage question, and evening wear phases. Applications typically open months before the local competitions.

History

Miss America began in 1921 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as a way to extend the summer tourist season. The first winner was Margaret Gorman, representing Washington DC. Over the decades, the pageant evolved from a swimsuit-based event into a scholarship competition. In 2018, the organisation eliminated the swimsuit competition and rebranded as Miss America 2.0, emphasising talent, achievement, and advocacy over physical appearance.
