About Miss South Africa 2026

Miss South Africa is one of the most prestigious and beloved national pageants in the world, celebrated as a symbol of South African pride, beauty, and social progress. Held annually with a live grand finale broadcast on South African national television, it regularly draws audiences of millions and generates nationwide excitement. The competition has a rich history of producing women who go on to achieve extraordinary success on the world stage: Miss South Africa titleholders have won Miss Universe three times (Anneline Kriel 1974, Margaret Gardiner 1978, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters 2017) and Miss World (Penelope Anne Coelen 1958, Jacqui Goldman 1974, among others), placing South Africa among the most decorated nations in international pageant history.

The selection process is rigorous and transparent, typically beginning with open public auditions in major cities across the country, followed by a top 30 and then top 10 announcement. Finalists undergo weeks of grooming, interview coaching, media training, and advocacy development before the televised grand finale. Judging criteria include poise, intelligence, communication, social responsibility, and the ability to represent South Africa with dignity and conviction on the international stage.

Miss South Africa has been a powerful platform for social advocacy. Past titleholders have championed causes including HIV/AIDS awareness, gender-based violence, education access, mental health, and youth empowerment. The organisation has a particularly strong commitment to using the platform for social good, and candidates with clear, passionate, and well-developed advocacy positions consistently perform well. The pageant is open to South African women of all racial backgrounds and the field routinely reflects the country's extraordinary cultural diversity.

How to Apply

Shortlisted candidates from public auditions are invited to a closed judging event, with the top 30 and top 10 announced publicly. Finalists participate in the full competition programme leading to the televised grand finale. The winner represents South Africa at Miss Universe and a separate titleholder may represent at Miss World, depending on the organisation's current structure.

History

Miss South Africa was established in 1955 and has run continuously since, making it one of Africa's longest-running national pageants. The competition initially operated under apartheid-era restrictions, with non-white South Africans excluded, but the post-1994 democratic era transformed the competition into one that genuinely reflects the Rainbow Nation. The pageant is associated with Sun International, a major South African hospitality and entertainment group, and draws sponsorship from prominent South African brands. South Africa's international pageant record is exceptional: the country has produced multiple Miss Universe and Miss World winners, and South African delegates are widely regarded as among the most well-prepared and capable on the international circuit.
